History:
Built originally as a prison by the Spaniards, this building dates back to the 17th Century. In subsequent times it became the Hotel Universe, hosting the famous Cuban hero Jose Marti as well as General Maximo Gomez.
To commemorate their meeting, the Cultural Patrimony as well as the Cuban Embassy bestowed a plaque to this historic site in their memory.
Other famous occupants included Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the Dominican Republic, Cesareo Emiliano, Woss and Gil.
The French and Haitians also occupied the building; traces of this can be seen on the floor of the upper level.
The turn of the century brought many changes to this extraordinary building, during the rule of Trujillo it was transformed into a primary school, thereafter it was converted again into a commercial building, it remained as such until a fire destroyed the right side of the building.
After this the building was left abandoned for the next 25 years, then 2 Spanish architects purchased it and began to restore it.
The next major restoration was started in early 2000, and with the guidance of the historical society, the architects were able to combine the important historic elements, the colonial aspect, plus integrate an elegant modern flair without loosing old world charm.
The project was completed September 2001.
This building is classified as WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE, and is privately owned with a clear title.
